Why Volunteering Makes Sense for Seniors

As a senior volunteer, you can make a difference in your community.  Many agencies and organizations have experienced deep cuts in funding over the last several years and need people willing to volunteer their time now more than ever.  Furthermore, as a volunteer, it is not only a way to give back but it can provide you with a sense of purpose as well as a chance to experience new things and make new friends.

If you are looking to get involved, there are plenty of programs designed with senior volunteers in mind.  One of the biggest and most well-known organizations is the Senior Corps, which is committed to connecting individuals 55 years and older to the people and organizations with a need.  According to Senior Corps, they help seniors “become mentors, coaches or companions to people in need, or contribute their job skills and expertise to community projects and organizations.”  While we know that all volunteers make a difference, seniors bring a lifetime of experience and knowledge to their volunteering.  The manpower they provide helps organizations save money and run more effectively.

As a Senior Corps volunteer, you will receive plenty of guidance and training on how to best use your talents and interests.  Senior Corps has been around for a long time as it was conceived during the Kennedy administration.  It funds the following three programs:  Foster Grandparents, Senior Companions, and the largest, the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP).

We know that volunteering is a great benefit to communities and organizations but it also offers benefits to volunteers.  Senior Corps cites research that indicates “volunteers enjoy better health, make new friendships, stay active and involved in the community, and learn new skills.”  Service offers an excellent opportunity to enhance the quality of your life and overall health.
